Warning over Council Tax refund scams
15th February 2018
Three Rivers District Council is aware of a number of Council Tax refund scams that are currently operating across the country.
A resident has recently reported that they received a telephone call from “The Tax Recovery Agency” saying that if the resident paid them £150, by card, they could then get them a £2,000 refund from their Council Tax. The caller was very persistent when asking for the card details and when the resident wouldn’t provide them, said they would phone back!
Please be aware that someone may:
- telephone you
- email you
- text you
- message you
- or appear at your door, claiming that you are owed a refund or that they can reduce your Council Tax bill as you are in the wrong Council Tax Band.
The callers may claim to be from the Council or the Valuation Office Agency and they may use a number of tactics to get you to part with your money including:
- Asking you to pay a fee in order to get the refund
- Asking for your bank details
- Asking for your card details and pin number
- Claiming that you have to pay a fee to challenge your Council Tax Band or that you must have an agent representing you to do this.
If your Council Tax account is in credit Three Rivers District Council will write to you concerning the matter, and will refund you using the bank details held from your Direct Debit, if applicable.
