Valuable safety education for children

More than 700 Year 6 children from across Three Rivers and Watford benefited from a range of interactive safety workshops at the annual Crucial Crew event.

The scheme, funded by Three Rivers District Council and coordinated by Child Safety Media, took place at Watford Football Club’s Vicarage Road Stadium. The children, all from local primary schools, took part in a variety of interactive safety education workshops covering a range of important topics including staying safe online, fire safety and CPR.

Between 29 June – 7 July local agencies, including Hertfordshire Constabulary, Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service, Network Rail, Herts Young Homeless, Spectrum Families & Young Peoples Services (CGL) and East of England Ambulance Service provided fun, interactive workshops.

The workshops were designed to teach valuable skills from the professionals, through practical demonstrations and discussions of real-life situations. The engaging sessions included a fire hazard spotting task, a hands-on CPR experience, discussions around internet safety and social media and a chance to have a go with a pair of beer goggles to see how alcohol could impact coordination.

Cllr Steve Drury, Three Rivers District Council’s Lead Member for Community Engagement, Public Safety and Housing, said: “I am proud that we have continued to fund such a meaningful event for the children. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in putting this event together, including Watford Football Club who provided the venue free of charge.”

Michelle Wright, the council’s Community Safety & Safeguarding Manager said: “It was fantastic to see the children engaged in these workshops and to hear their views and insightful questions. The children are getting ready for their transition to secondary school, and these sessions help them to learn about important issues that may not be covered by the curriculum.”
