Toastie Week helps competition spread message

20th April 2005

Three Rivers' healthy sandwich competition has received the backing of a very special campaign. Supporters of National Toastie Week (21 - 28 April) have praised the emphasis on tasty and healthy eating that is being highlighted by the local competition run by Three Rivers District Council and Watford and Three Rivers NHS Primary Care Trust.

Three Rivers District Council's Kirsty Fox said:

"Sandwiches can be a healthy option whether eaten fresh or toasted. But how healthy are yours? Everyone is welcome to enter our competition and perhaps win £20 of leisure vouchers.

She added:

"We also want to know about the worst sandwiches and there is a booby prize of £20 for the absolute worst to encourage healthier habits. One of our staff claims a preference for lard and Mars Bar sandwiches but we're not sure if he's serious!"

Three Rivers' competition, which closes on Saturday 30 April, has been backed by Guy Unwin, the inventor of Toastabags and supporter of National Toastie Week.

Inventor Guy Unwin said:

"We were delighted to hear that the Three Rivers District Council is running a healthy sandwich competition.

"We're actively involved in National Toastie Week and healthy options are a significant part of our campaign too. A recent competition amongst 100 first year students at Westminster Kingsway College, the catering college that trained Jamie Oliver, Ainsley Harriott and Anthony Worrell Thompson, produced some very innovative and health conscious sandwiches.

"Good luck to everyone in the Three Rivers healthy sandwich competition. And if you want to share your healthy toastie recipe ideas with us as well, you can publish them on
