See how energy efficiency upgrades are benefiting Three Rivers residents
Residents can see firsthand how renewable technologies and energy-saving improvements are saving local homeowners money while improving comfort and cutting emissions.
Three Rivers District Council has partnered with local non-profit Grand Union Community Energy (GUCE), which aims to develop and promote renewable energy locally – to organise a series of free events for residents to see the benefits of retrofit measures, such as insulation, heat pumps and solar panels, in real homes and hear the experiences from homeowners directly.
Known as the Open Home events, these will take place on across the district throughout October:
- Saturday 10 October – Croxley Green
- Saturday 17 October – Rickmansworth
- Monday 19 October - Chorleywood
- Saturday 24 October – Croxley Green
The event on 24 October will showcase a house that has been retrofitted to the ultra-low-energy Passivhaus standard, reducing the occupants’ energy use by an astounding 95%!
The events programme will culminate in the Renewables Roadshow event on Saturday 14 November at The Manor House in Abbots Langley. The free event will feature presentations on home retrofit and renewable energy, information about available grants, and opportunities to speak directly with local, accredited installers.
The Renewables Roadshow will also feature award-winning retrofit advocate and author, Judith Leary-Joyce, who will share her experience of slashing her energy bills by 75% after making improvements to her solid-brick Victorian terraced home in St Albans.

Cllr Aidan Bentley, Three Rivers District Council’s Lead Member for Climate Change and Sustainability, said: “Emissions from domestic energy use make up almost a quarter of the district’s carbon emissions, so it’s important that we provide as many opportunities as possible to households to retrofit their homes. Retrofits will not only benefit residents’ bank accounts but our local environment too.

These events offer a great opportunity to see what is possible, hear directly from people who have already made changes and get trusted advice from local experts. Whether your boiler is nearing the end of its life, you’re planning a home renovation, or you’re interested in solar panels, these events can help you understand your options and take the next step with greater confidence.”
