Dementia Friendly Community
Three Rivers District Council is proud to announce its commitment to becoming a dementia‑friendly community in 2026, recognising the growing need to support residents affected by dementia.
Nationally, an estimated 982,000 people in the UK are currently living with dementia, this number is expected to rise significantly in the coming years. Around 1 in 3 people living with dementia do not have a formal diagnosis, meaning many individuals and families are managing symptoms without access to the support they need.
By improving understanding, accessibility, and communication across the district, the council aims to ensure that people living with dementia, and those who care for them, feel supported and able.
Why become a Dementia Friendly Community
Dementia is a progressive neurological condition that affects memory, thinking, communication and daily functioning. It is caused by diseases of the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and others.
One of the earliest and most noticeable changes is often in communication. As dementia affects the parts of the brain responsible for language and processing information, a person may:
- Struggle to find the right words
- Lose their train of thought
- Find it harder to follow conversations
- Become overwhelmed by long or complex sentences
With patience, clear language and supportive communication strategies, it is still possible to maintain meaningful connection and understanding.
A Dementia Friendly Community helps remove the barriers that make everyday life more difficult for people living with dementia. When neighbours, shops, services and public spaces understand the challenges, such as memory loss, communication difficulties or sensory overload, they can respond with patience, clarity and confidence.
Being dementia friendly means:
- People feel safe, understood and included
- Individuals can stay independent for longer
- Carers feel supported and recognised
- Communities become kinder, more accessible and more connected
Get involved

- Support staff who are carers
- Appear on a public-facing map of dementia friendly places
This framework is practical, achievable and designed for businesses, charities, community groups and faith settings.
