Eighty years since the day Japan surrendered in 1945, which signalled the end of the Second World War, is being commemorated at Three Rivers District Council’s head office in Rickmansworth.

The UK marks Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) on Friday 15 August. Ahead of this day, the 80th anniversary was marked at Three Rivers House with the raising of the Union Flag in tribute to the Second World War generation. More than 365,000 British and 1.5 million Commonwealth troops  had served across Asia and the Pacific.

The flag was raised by Deputy Leader of Three Rivers District Council and Armed Forces Champion Cllr Sarah Nelmes and the Chair of the Council, Cllr Stephen King.

Cllr Nelmes said: “80 years ago, thousands of British and Commonwealth military continued their brave fight in the Far East which brought an end to the Second World War. It is important that we mark this occasion, to ensure that their sacrifice is never forgotten.”

Cllr King said: “Our thoughts are with those affected by war and conflict, and we are proud to mark VJ Day, to reflect on the sacrifices and courage shown, and to ensure the legacy is remembered.”

Residents across Three Rivers are invited to join in with local events and activities taking place across the district to commemorate the 80th anniversary. Find out how you can take part: https://www.threerivers.gov.uk/ve-vj-80-anniversary
