South Oxhey benefit fraud sentence

11th February 2014

A South Oxhey resident has appeared in Harrow Crown Court for sentencing on Thursday 6th February 2014 having previously pleaded guilty to a number of benefit fraud offences.

The Court heard that both Local Authority and Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) fraud investigators had obtained evidence to show that Mrs Barton of Matlock Crescent, South Oxhey, who had been claiming Income  Support, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit totalling £35,773p, had failed to disclose capital assets in excess of the prescribed limits.

Having considered the facts and the guilty plea Mrs Barton was awarded an 18 month suspended sentence, a community order to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and is required to repay the overpayment.

The Council is committed to ensuring that benefits are delivered to those who are entitled to them. Please advise Three Rivers about any person you feel may be receiving benefit which they are not entitled to.
