Plan progressed to make walking, cycling and wheeling safer in Three Rivers

Cycling and walking is set to be easier, safer and more enjoyable after the council took an exciting step towards improving routes through the district.
Three Rivers District Council adopted its long-term strategy, known as the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), which sets out how the local authority aims to create high-quality, safe and attractive paths for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
The routes are designed not just for short everyday trips, like going to school or the shops, but also to help people as part of longer journeys, like getting to a train station or bus stop, so different ways of travelling can work well together. The plan has been shaped and improved using ideas and feedback from local people and community groups throughout its development.
Cllr Sarah Nelmes, Deputy Council Leader and Lead Member for General Public Services, said: “Adopting this new plan is a big step forward. We want to make it easier and more enjoyable for everyone to walk or cycle throughout the district.
“These changes are about giving people more choices and better ways to travel. Throughout its development, we have listened closely to what people wanted and they have been key to shaping the final plan that we have adopted. I’d like to thank everyone who engaged in this process.”
The LCWIP was adopted at Policy and Resources Committee on Monday 21 July. The improvements will be subject to further detailed review by Hertfordshire County Council and will move forward depending on funding. As detailed designs are developed, there will be more focused and tailored consultation in local areas. This means communities will have further opportunities to share their thoughts and help shape the changes in their neighbourhoods.
