Council wants Three Rivers elections to go ahead as planned

The government has been told that local elections in Three Rivers should take place as planned following an invitation to some local authorities to cancel them.
The Leader of Three Rivers District Council, Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst OBE, has written to Alison McGovern MP, Minister of State for Local Government and Homelessness, stating the local elections this May should not be cancelled or postponed.
Last year, the government invited councils undergoing Local Government Reorganisation, which seeks to abolish district and county councils for unitary authorities, to cancel their local elections. In February, the government will start its formal consultation on abolishing Three Rivers District Council in favour of a new unitary authority, with the intention of there being elections for this new unitary council in May 2027.
Cllr Giles-Medhurst said: “Senior officers at the council, some of my fellow members and I collectively agreed that there is no sufficient reason to cancel the upcoming democratic local elections. Therefore, I have written to the Minister stating that the planned elections in Three Rivers should go-ahead and we have no capacity concerns by holding the elections as scheduled.”
