Spring has sprung – ‘let’s keep Three Rivers clean’

Residents were joined by councillors this week in South Oxhey for a public litter pick to kick-off a district-wide appeal to keep Three Rivers clean.

Around 40 bags of rubbish were collected at Pond Wood – a small wood at the junction of Northwick Road and Seacroft Gardens in South Oxhey – helping to clear the area of litter on Saturday morning. Other items collected during the two hour litter pick included bicycles wheels and traffic cones.

Monday (20 March) was the first day of spring and the Leader of Three Rivers District Council, Cllr Sarah Nelmes, is urging people across the district to volunteer and help keep it clean and tidy.

Cllr Nelmes said: “I feel very lucky to live in such a beautiful district, with many parks and open spaces as well as our towns and villages. This is an invitation to anyone interested to come out and organise their own litter picking events to help keep the district looking its best.

“Our officers work hard every day to do just that, but every little helps – so if anyone wants to get involved this is an opportunity to help keep Three Rivers clean. I know the great feeling of satisfaction I and others had on Saturday when we were out there making a difference by clearing Pond Wood of litter. Remember, please don’t just drop litter – always put it in a bin or take it home.”

Each month Three Rivers District Council’s street cleansing operatives spend around 1,843 hours cleaning the streets of Three Rivers, emptying 7,968 litter bins and sorting them for recycling, and empty around 2,528 dog poo bins.

The council is encouraging people to lead their own litter picks throughout the year, to help keep local area clean. Residents and organisations can borrow the equipment from the council, and officers will collect the litter afterwards from pre-arranged collection points.
