Come and play the game that’s taking the country by storm as the district’s first council-owned pickleball courts open.

Using funds from the Capital Funding for Health and Wellbeing pot, Three Rivers District Council has repurposed one of the tennis courts at Eastbury Recreation Ground in Batchworth Lane to become three pickleball courts that are free to use.

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, making it suitable for all ages and skill levels. The game is played on a court similar to a badminton court, using perforated plastic balls and paddles.

What was once a niche sport that started in the US has become a popular sport in the UK over the last few years, with an estimated 35,000 players taking part.

Cllr Chris Lloyd, Lead Member for Leisure, said: “Pickleball is taking the country by storm, primarily due its inclusivity where players of all ages can join in and have fun. I am very pleased that the council has installed not just one pickleball court, or two, but three courts so more people can enjoy the game and feel the physical, mental and social benefits this sport brings. I look forward to bringing my paddle and having a go myself!”

To play pickleball at Eastbury Recreation Ground, you will need to bring your own paddle and ball. Rules of pickleball can be found here.
