Three Rivers Homes, the joint venture between Watford Community Housing and Three Rivers District Council, has held a topping-out ceremony to celebrate the ongoing development of its first new homes. Representatives from Watford Community Housing, Three Rivers District Council and contractor Bugler Developments visited the site of The Chess on Heysham Drive in South Oxhey to celebrate the construction reaching its highest point.

By working together through Three Rivers Homes, the housing association and the local authority can pool their resources to deliver more much-needed affordable housing in Hertfordshire. The Chess is the first development to be built as a result of this innovative partnership.

Built on the former site of the Grapevine pub, The Chess will deliver 33 new homes across a mix of tenures, providing a range of housing options to suit local people’s needs. The development includes 8 one-bedroom and 25 two-bedroom properties, with 18 of the new homes for market rent, 10 for social rent and five for shared ownership.

Three Rivers Homes is proud to be working with Rickmansworth-based Bugler Developments, ensuring that the project boosts employment in the local area. The family-owned house-building company was formed in 1982 by Tom Bugler and now operates across London and the South-East. Bugler Developments are working closely with the local community, interacting with local primary schools and even taking on a local resident as a Trainee Site Manager.

The topping-out ceremony celebrated the construction of The Chess, which began in February 2018, reaching its highest point. It is scheduled for completion in March 2019.

Speaking about the development, Martina Kennedy, Director of Clarendon Living, said: “We’re thrilled to be delivering these first homes as part of our Three Rivers Homes joint venture and we are grateful to Three Rivers District Council for their support. It’s vital that we work well with our partners to provide housing that’s not only affordable for a range of people, but modern and comfortable too. It’s great to see how well the construction is coming along here in South Oxhey and we are all looking forward to seeing the development completed next year.”

Dr Steven Halls, Chief Executive of Three Rivers District Council said: “I am delighted to be here today to celebrate this achievement. It’s been exciting to be involved in this housing development - a great addition to our portfolio of affordable housing in the district. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the project so far and wish the team continued success as the development continues through to completion.”

Andy Bugler, Chief Executive of Bugler Group, said: “It’s great to be back working in the area where this company began. We don’t often get to work so close to home! Building affordable housing in Three Rivers is really important, and I hope we can operate more locally in the future. By working closely with the community and with our partners on this project, we’ve been able to ensure this development is progressing well.”
