Are you ready to vote in upcoming elections?

NewsUpdated: 14 April 2026Elections and democracy

With elections happening across Three Rivers this May, residents are being reminded to register to vote, and to take photo ID with them when voting at a polling station.

Local elections are taking place on Thursday 7 May, and these include the election of District Councillors for Three Rivers District Council as well as the election of a Parish Councillor for Watford Rural Parish Council.

There will also be a Referendum on the Abbots Langley Neighbourhood Plan for the Abbots Langley Neighbourhood Area, which aligns with the parish boundary. The draft Neighbourhood Plan has been produced by Abbots Langley Parish Council and local residents to create a plan that provides planning policies for potential development within the Abbots Langley Neighbourhood Area.

Neighbourhood Plans allow communities to develop a shared vision for their specific areas, giving more control over the type, location, size and design of development. It does not allocate sites for housing.

Joanne Wagstaffe, Returning Officer at Three Rivers District Council, said: “With only a few weeks until the elections and referendum, make sure you’re ready – the deadline to register to vote is midnight on 20 April.

“If you are unable to get to the polling station on the day, you can apply to vote by post or by proxy – and remember, if you are voting in person, you will need to show photo ID”.

Staff at the polling station will check voters photo ID before giving out a ballot paper. Voters will only need to show one form of photo ID - it needs to be the original version and not a photocopy. Photo ID can still be used if it is out of date, as long as it still looks like the voter.

A wide range of photo ID is acceptable, including a passport or driving licence. The full list of acceptable documents can be found here.

Important dates for the election and referendum:

  • The deadline to register to vote is midnight on 20 April
  • The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on 21 April
  • The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is 5pm on 28 April
