Statement on national lockdown from Cllr Sarah Nelmes, Leader of Three Rivers District Council

Updated: 5 January 2021

The last thing any of us wanted was another lockdown. I know it will be devastating for many people, from the vulnerable and elderly, to local businesses trying to make ends meet.

The last thing any of us wanted was another lockdown. I know it will be devastating for many people, from the vulnerable and elderly, to local businesses trying to make ends meet. Coming at this time of year, as we face long, winter nights, it will also take its toll on our mental health.

But with Covid infection rates soaring, we must protect the NHS which is already under immense pressure, and save lives.

In the past week alone, here in Three Rivers we have seen more than 900 new Covid cases, with similar numbers across the county. West Herts Hospitals is reporting more than 230 patients in acute beds with an average of 34 daily admissions, and 18 patients on ventilators. These numbers are rising and sadly so too is the number of deaths.

This cannot be ignored. That’s why every single one of us must stay at home and strictly follow the rules with immediate effect:

Only leave home to:

  • shop for basic necessities, for you or a vulnerable person
  • go to work, or provide voluntary or charitable services, if you cannot reasonably do so from home
  • exercise with your household (or support bubble) or one other person, this should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area.
  • meet your support bubble  or childcare bubble  where necessary, but only if you are legally permitted to form one
  • seek medical assistance or avoid injury, illness or risk of harm (including domestic abuse)
  • attend education or childcare - for those eligible

If you're struggling, or know someone who needs help, let me assure you that support is available. We are working very closely with our partners, including Watford and Three Rivers Trust, and Citizens Advice. There is also a wide range of support available for anyone with mental health concerns.
