Visitors to Rickmansworth Aquadrome are reminded that swimming is not permitted in the lakes and river.

Three Rivers District Council has warned the water at the Aquadrome is not safe for swimmers.

Clear signage around the popular open space indicates that swimming is not allowed.

The Aquadrome is a nature reserve – through which the River Colne flows – and also features two lakes, Batchworth and Bury Lake.

Visitors are reminded that open water can be deep, unpredictable and contain hidden dangers.

Cllr Steve Drury, the council’s Lead Member for Community Engagement, Public Safety & Housing, said: “Swimming in the Aquadrome, a nature reserve, is not permitted for a variety of reasons relating to safety and the environment. I urge everyone to take notice of our ‘no swim’ signs for their own safety and for the protection of the habitats of the Aquadrome. Nature reserves are not managed with the safety of swimmers in mind so there is a risk of injury or illness.”

Further reasons the council does not allow swimming at the Aquadrome include:

  • Disturbance of Wildlife: Swimming disturbs the natural habitats of wildlife, forcing them to feed and rest elsewhere, which can lead to stress and health issues for the animals.
  • Damage to Riverbanks and Tree Roots: Entering and leaving the water damages riverbanks and tree roots, which can destroy nesting sites for threatened species like water voles and fish.
  • Environmental Impact: Swimming can disturb the natural environment, potentially causing damage to sensitive ecosystems and habitats.
