Sustainability
The Council's Local Development Framework will include policies requiring all new development proposals to work to achieve zero carbon emissions. These policies will include measures to minimise energy and water consumption, reduce CO2 emissions and counteract the effects of climate change, and secure renewable energy solutions. In the interim the Council has approved planning policies to ensure that all proposed developments are designed and built to sustainable standards. The policies may be downloaded below.

The Council endorses the "Building Futures Guide" prepared by the eleven Hertfordshire authorities. The Guide contains 7 modules covering Air, Noise, Design, Waste, Energy, Water, Materials and relevant checklists, and provides information for developers and householders on how to integrate environmental sustainability into the built environment. The Guide proposes solutions that are practical and deliverable. It also provides a broad range of case studies ranging from homeowners undertaking extensions to major regeneration projects and strategic housing developments. A summary of the Guide can be downloaded below and the full modules can be viewed on www.hertsdirect.org/buildingfutures
