About Prevent

Three Rivers District Council collaborates with the police, housing providers, schools, and other local agencies to protect vulnerable people from exploitation. One of the key initiatives is Prevent—a national programme designed to stop individuals from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

Prevent focuses on identifying people at risk of radicalisation and offering appropriate support. Radicalisation occurs when someone adopts extreme beliefs that may lead to supporting terrorist groups or activities. The programme addresses all forms of terrorism, with the most common in the UK being Extreme Right-Wing and Islamist terrorism.

Prevent is delivered locally by experts who understand the specific risks and needs of their communities. These include local authorities, police, charities, and community organisations.

Understand why Prevent is important to reduce terrorism

Terrorism has a devastating impact on victims, families, and entire communities. In the UK, many lives have been lost and countless others injured due to terrorist attacks.

A person can commit a terrorist offence without carrying out an attack—for example, by downloading terrorist content online or joining a terrorist group.

If you're concerned someone may be at risk of radicalisation, Prevent offers advice and support to help protect them and others from harm.

If there is an immediate danger, always call 999.
