Three Rivers District Council had the highest household recycling rate in the Eastern Region in 2024/2025 according to recently released figures by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

With a 61.1% household recycling rate, the council has maintained its position in the top five recyclers in England.

Emma Sheridan, Associate Director for Environment, said: "We are delighted that Three Rivers continues to be one of the top recyclers in the country, thanks to our dedicated residents, the high-quality service we provide and our devoted and professional staff working in refuse collection, street cleaning and grounds maintenance as well as our back-office administrative, engagement and customer service officers.

“As a council, we are incredibly proud to continue to be top of the figures for the East of England and to be in the top five across the country, as we have been for more than a decade.”

Defra collates recycling performance data from all local authorities on an annual basis. Three Rivers was at the top of the league in 2021/22 and 2019/20 and had the second-highest recycling rate overall in 2022/23.
