Three Rivers celebrates Chanukah

Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is marked by the lighting of candles in the home over eight days.

Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is marked by the lighting of candles in the home over eight days. It is also a communal event and it is traditional on at least one night, to light the candles with others.

Northwood United Synagogue (NUS) are very grateful to Three Rivers District Council who have hosted a community Chanukah candle-lighting ceremony over the past three years and are again opening their doors this year for this special event.

Rabbi Aron Zerbib, of NUS, said: “The candle-lighting at Three Rivers has presented a real opportunity for us all to meet together and narrow the gaps within our society. Throughout the year, we tend to live within our own circle of friends but on Chanukah, we share our light with our neighbours, our friends and also with strangers because even the smallest flame can light up the darkest room.”

David Hill, Interim Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to be part of this festive occasion. It is great to see members of the local Jewish community, councillors, dignitaries, employees, residents from all faiths and visitors come together and celebrate this festive moment in the Jewish calendar.”

This year’s ceremony will be held on Monday, 23 December from 6 to 7pm at Three Rivers House, Northway, Rickmansworth WD3 1RL.

If you would like to come along, please contact the synagogue office via email: admin@northwoodus.org or call them on 01923 820004.
