The Red Ensign flag is flying at Three Rivers House, Rickmansworth to mark the UK's twentieth Merchant Navy Day.

Since its introduction in 2000, Merchant Navy Day has provided an opportunity to remember the sacrifices of the seafarers of the past, and to look ahead to our future as a maritime nation.

Paula Hiscocks, Chairman of the Council, said: "We need to remember our seafarers of the past. We owe them a debt of gratitude for their sacrifices and the contribution they made to our nation. It is encouraging to see the number of young people seeking a career at sea."

Three Rivers is one of many councils across the UK that is hoisting a Red Ensign, to help raise awareness of our island nation's ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers.
