Come and see what flaps in the night at the Rickmansworth Aquadrome later this month.

Residents and nature-lovers can join Three Rivers District Council officers on a guided bat walk on Tuesday 30 September at 7pm and learn about the nocturnal creatures at the nature reserve and how they can be identified in the wild.

Bat detectors will be used to hear the bats call through echolocation, a soundwave which is made by the bat when hunting.

Cllr Jon Tankard, Lead Member for Climate Change and Sustainability, said: “The Rickmansworth Aquadrome is home to many incredible and unique species, but we don’t usually see how the site is benefitting our nocturnal friends.

“Out of the 18 species in the UK, five were accurately identified to be in the Aquadrome, with a potential five more heard but not seen. The success of the ecological surveys undertaken as part of the Rickmansworth Aquadrome Project means that the site is alive throughout the days and nights, creating unique experiences for our residents and visitors at different times in the day.

“The bat walk is an opportunity learn about the bats of Three Rivers and appreciate their nocturnal world as well as how habitat enhancements can benefit the bats that call the site their home and how changes can be made through the ongoing Rickmansworth Aquadrome Project. Thanks to the National Lottery and its players for making this possible.”
