Record number of free trees available in ‘Your Tree Our Future’ 2026 scheme

Hertfordshire County Council is offering 100,000 trees, 3,550 more than last year, and residents across Three Rivers are being urged not to miss out by signing up to apply for their tree free of charge.

Delivered in partnership with the county’s ten district and borough councils, as well as several local charities, the initiative offers people the opportunity to plant trees at home, helping to enhance local community spaces and to support wildlife. One of the project’s key supporters, Herts FullStop, will also donate 5,000 trees to this year’s giveaway.

Through the scheme, residents can apply for up to five individual trees, choosing from a selection of eight native species suited to Hertfordshire’s landscape and climate. Alternatively, applicants can request four trees and a hedgerow pack with enough trees to plant 6m of hedgerow, ideal for creating natural boundaries and wildlife habitats.

Together, these trees are expected to make a significant contribution to reducing carbon emissions while improving air quality and supporting biodiversity across the county.

Trees will be available while stocks last, with a set allocation for each district and borough.

Cllr Paul Zukowskyj, Executive Member for Environment, Transport & Growth at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “Planting a tree is one of the simplest yet most meaningful actions residents can take to support our environment. Not only do trees help reduce carbon in our atmosphere, but they also create greener, healthier places to live – boosting wellbeing, supporting wildlife, and helping our communities adapt to the challenges of climate change.

“This scheme is a key part of our wider ambition to make Hertfordshire more sustainable.

“After taking on leadership of Hertfordshire County Council, we set an ambitious target of 101,000 trees - and we’ve beaten it by more than 25%, planting 126,829 across the county. Now, we’re going even further, with a new, more ambitious target of 150,000.”

Residents who apply will receive confirmation by email, along with details of how and where to collect their trees from a local distribution point in early December 2026.
