The Red Ensign flag is flying at Three Rivers House, Rickmansworth today, Friday 3 September, to mark Merchant Navy Day in the UK.

Since its introduction in 2000, Merchant Navy Day has provided an opportunity to remember the sacrifices of the seafarers of the past, and to look ahead to our future as a maritime nation.

Cllr Keith Martin, Chair of the Council, said: "It is important that we remember our seafarers of the past, to whom we owe our gratitude for their sacrifices and the contribution they made to our nation. It is encouraging that young people are seeking a career at sea."

Cllr Jon Tankard, Three Rivers’ current appointee to the Hertfordshire Armed Forces Covenant, added: "I'm proud to represent our district celebrating our merchant mariners, both past and present."

Three Rivers is one of many local authorities across the UK to raise the Red Ensign today, to help remember and raise awareness of our island nation's dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers.
