Project successfully restores globally rare chalk stream

A section of a globally rare chalk stream within Three Rivers has been successfully restored by the district council and its partners.
Earlier this year, work began on a 500-metre section of the River Chess, upstream of Scotsbridge Playing Fields in Rickmansworth, with the aim of protecting it from bank erosion and creating a safe green space for people to enjoy, whilst enhancing the habitat.
Natural materials, woody habitat structures and flow detectors were installed to reinforce its banks as well as keep the silt level down and keep the water flowing.
Two gravel augmentation areas were created where erosion was particularly significant to alleviate pressure of the riverbank and tree works were undertaken to open the river to sunlight, allowing vegetation to thrive, such as yellow flag iris, a native flower that grows in wetland conditions.
Temporary fencing has been installed along areas of the River Chess where the banks are impacted by erosion to give vegetation the opportunity to grow free of disturbance. An information board has also been erected to promote responsible enjoyment of the river, highlighting the importance species that call the area their home as well as tips on how to be a responsible dog owner.
Cllr Jon Tankard, Lead Member for Climate Change and Sustainability, said: “We are humbled to have one of the rarest habitats in the world and the rich and diverse wildlife it attracts here in Three Rivers. Hertfordshire is home to 10% of the worlds chalk streams, so it is vital that we ensure that they are protected, restored and respected.
“The work that we and our partners have undertaken ensure that the River Chess remains healthy and strong so that it can continue to be enjoyed by both wildlife and our residents.”
This project was funded by Thames Water River Chess through the Smarter Water Catchment, as well as the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, working in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council’s Countryside Management Service.
