The Red Ensign is being flown by Three Rivers District Council today to raise awareness of the UK’s dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers, prior to Merchant Navy Day tomorrow (Saturday, September 3).

This annual flag-raising event honours the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy, including those who lost their lives at times of war, and celebrates the vital role of merchant seafarers in the lives of our communities.

The Red Ensign flag was hoisted on the flagstaff outside the council offices at Three Rivers House by the Chair of Three Rivers District Council, Cllr Debbie Morris.

Cllr Morris said: “I was delighted to raise the Red Ensign flag today. It honours our wonderful Merchant Navy and recognises the sacrifices that they made and continue to make for our country."
