South Oxhey Leisure Centre, managed by leisure operator Everyone Active in partnership with Three Rivers District Council, is hosting students from Colnbrook School, offering swimming lessons to its pupils two days a week.
Students receive full access to the swimming facilities, including the main and teaching pools on a Monday and Thursday each week.
Billy Johnston, Everyone Active General Manager, said: “We have been really pleased to be able to offer Colnbrook School and its students an opportunity to use our swimming facilities. We’re able to offer ease of access to our pool for those who need assistance, which has benefitted the students allowing them to take part in physical activity”.
Pupils have access to a 25-metre pool, which boasts a quiet and welcoming environment, a pool pod with accessible platforms to aid those with disabilities or restrictive mobility to access the water unassisted. The site also boasts an accessible Changing Places changing room.
Caroline Aplin, Colnbrook School Headteacher, said: “As part of our curriculum the children need to access a range of activities. South Oxhey Leisure Centre has offered us a fantastic opportunity to use their swimming pool. Swimming is a very important life skill and something that many of the children enjoy.
“I would like to say that the team have been very helpful and supportive, and it has been a positive experience. They have been very supportive when asked questions.”
Cllr Chris Lloyd, Lead Member for Leisure at Three Rivers District Council, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the young people involved. As well as being fun, swimming is a great way to keep fit and healthy - an activity that young people can learn and continue for a lifetime. We are delighted to be able to support this great opportunity.”
