Home Composting

Although we offer a kerbside collection of waste that can be composted in the brown bins we would still encourage you to compost at home. This is because the waste does not have to be transported anywhere and it also provides you with free compost for your garden.  Find out more and buy compost bins.

What can be composted?

1ce031fd144d00.jpgMore than 30% of household waste can be composted at home. To get the best compost it is best to add an equal mixture of "greens" and "browns".

Greens are wet items such as tea bags, vegetable peelings, grass and fruit.

Browns are dry items such as leaves, dead plants, cardboard and paper.

How long will it take?web1356-compost-bin-with-garden-fork-and-trellis-web-version-72ppi.jpg

It can take between 9 to 12 months to produce compost at home. If the home composter is located in a sunny spot the composting process will happen faster than in a shady location.
