You may be surprised to find that local government has an enormous range of jobs and opportunities. Working for a council provides a great starting point for your future career, wherever it may take you. Three Rivers District Council wants to support people within the local area, offering work experience opportunities, wherever possible.
Work experience will give you the opportunity to practice and develop some key skills and attributes in:
- Communication skills
- Team working
- Problem solving
- Customer Service
What can I expect?
Every placement is different, but they’re all designed to give you the opportunity to make the most of your time with us. When you arrive, your ‘Placement Manager’ will want to find out more about you and what you want to get out of your time with us. The average placement lasts for one week and you can choose from a number of different services to work in such as:
- Human Resources
- Culture and Play Services
- Customer Services
- Facilities Management
We cannot guarantee a work experience placement for everyone who applies or accommodate your preferred area. But we will always do our best to support you. Remember that whilst work experience is unpaid, it’s a great learning experience! This careers guide published by Local Government Association, also contains some useful information.

Testimonials of past work experience placements
‘Thank you so much for allowing me to have my work experience with you in the HR team. I would especially like to thank the learning & development team for teaching me so many things and I also would like to thank everyone who taught me something new and giving me support during my placement. I found the placement really beneficial, especially the information I learnt about HR, Health & Well-being and what HR does. The placement really helped me to think about what it would be like working in my future career’
‘I found it a great experience and it enlightened me about the world of work. I found everybody so welcoming and I had so much fun finding out about what HR does and learning about the office place. I am now considering a future career in HR because of my experience.’
