(1) Councillor Chris Hayward, seconded by Councillor David Sansom to move under Notice duly given as follows:
This Council views with deep concern and much regret the fact that not one of the Three Rivers Liberal Democrat County Councillors supported the recent County Council budget provision for a new secondary school in the Three Rivers District at the Hertfordshire County Council meeting held on 23 February 2010.’
(2) Councillor David Sansom, seconded by Councillor Chris Hayward to move under Notice duly given as follows:
This Council accepts that the Government has run out of money, it must cut costs and or increase taxes to avoid defaulting on Government debt for the first time in over 250 years. Whatever difficult decisions have to be made this Council deplores Labours planned increase in National Insurance. This is the worst of all tax increases. It will hit small business, holding back the recovery and keeping the unemployed from getting back into work. This Council asks the Chief Executive to write to the Chancellor of the Exchequer on May 7th and tell him that this is not the time to raise National Insurance.
(3) Councillor Ann Shaw, seconded by Councillors Steve Drury and Les Mead
a) Welcomes the confirmation by Herts County Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Education that Three Rivers DC has been ‘working very closely’ with the County Council to secure a much needed new secondary school for the area.
b) Condemns Herts County Council for selling off so many school sites in Three Rivers which has led to this catastrophic shortage of school places
c) Believes the Liberal Democrat approach to solving the shortage of school places – by working constructively with Herts County Council to progress this - is the best way forward for local pupils and their families
d) Calls on Herts County Council to allow parents to rank six secondary school preferences, rather than the existing three, to put them on an equal footing with parents in neighbouring authorities and to meet this request from local parents.
