Housing Benefit cheat prosecuted

A Benefit fraudster has been successfully prosecuted by Three Rivers District Council for falsely claiming Housing Benefit.

On 16  April 2013, Melanie Griffiths, of James Way, South Oxhey, pleaded guilty  at St Albans Magistrates Court to obtaining Housing Benefit dishonestly.  Melanie Griffiths failed to indicate that her partner had a second job on her Housing Benefit claim form. 

Failure to declare this information resulted in Melanie Griffiths receiving Housing Benefit in excess of £4,330.00 to which she was not entitled.

She was sentenced to a community order for  six  months, a six month supervision order with a specific requirement to complete a 10  day women’s activity order , together with  a contribution of £100 towards prosecution costs.  The money dishonestly claimed must also be repaid.
