Handmade Heritage Day 2017: explore, celebrate and enrich your local heritage!
31st March 2017
The much anticipated Handmade Heritage Day in Leavesden Country Park is on Saturday 6 May from 11am to 3pm. Look out for us near the YMCA, where parking is available. Thanks to National Lottery players, the Leisure team at Three Rivers District Council are delighted to announce a host of FREE activities and ways in which people can get involved in this exciting project:
- Artist led activities for people of all ages, create artwork to take home and add to our Woollen Wood textile display!
- Local historians and residents who have fascinating artefacts, photos, stories and memories to share with you about the Hospitals, Aerodrome and Rolls Royce and the heritage of Abbots Langley parish.
- A ‘Living History’ walk covering both the North and South sides of the park, led by well-known characters from the Hospitals’ past.
Made possible thanks to National Lottery funding of £8,800 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the Handmade Heritage Day is a showcase event for a community project that has been taking place in schools and groups across the district and is an opportunity for local residents and new visitors to the park, to come along and learn more about the heritage of the park and its former occupants.
Elaine Johnson, Community Arts Development Officer said: “Since we found out that Heritage Lottery Fund could help, it’s been an exciting and busy time for all of the partners. They’ve been out in the community teaching people about the local heritage, capturing stories and creating art works.
“Sharing this at our showcase event and inviting people from far and wide to participate will ensure the heritage is kept alive!”
Joined by former event partners, we are expecting new faces too. Children who’ve taken part in the project will be helping to bring the Living History walk to life with performances, adult community groups will display poignant art works and you can seek out one of our volunteers who can tell you more about sharing your stories.
All of the activities can be visited at any point during the day, however the guided walk will commence at 1.30pm from the site on the North Side. Bring a picnic, enjoy and make a day of it.
