District Council's Jennie reaches national award finals
02nd October 2006
Three Rivers District Council's Jennie Moore has been named as a finalist in the National Recycling Awards for Recycling Officer of the Year.
Jennie, the Council's Environmental Projects Officer, has been hard at work over the past year encouraging local residents of all ages to recycle and reduce their waste.
Her work has included regularly visiting local primary and secondary schools to talk to pupils about recycling, what happens when things are recycled, and how it helps the local environment.
To encourage families to recycle and reduce 'contamination' of recycling boxes, where the wrong items are placed in them, Jennie has also organised events including door-to-door visits to households and, more recently, two 'recycling roadshows' in Abbots Langley and South Oxhey in September.
Jennie also runs the Council's award-winning real nappy incentive scheme, which offers families up to £80 cashback for using real nappies instead of disposables. In addition, Jennie has been involved in the introduction of the green waste collection scheme, which provides each household with a brown bin for garden and other compostable waste.
"I am very pleased to be shortlisted, as I feel the work that I do is important and it is nice to get external recognition for this. I work in a great team and enjoy visiting schools and speaking with residents to help encourage residents to reduce, reuse and recycle."
Environmental Protection Manager Alison Page says:
"Jennie is a very deserving finalist in this category. She is a thoroughly dedicated team member, who always gives 100%. Her commitment to maximising recycling and promoting initiatives is second to none and it his her constant promoting of recycling that has helped Three Rivers residents to achieve an impressive 40% recycling rate."
The winners of the National Recycling Awards will be announced at an awards ceremony in Bournemouth on 15 November.
