100 landmark for nappy scheme

PR 78027th February 2007

They may not be able to walk yet, but some of the district's very youngest residents are already doing their bit for the local environment - and making a big difference.

The 100th family has just signed up to the District Council's real nappy cashback scheme. The scheme works by offering families up to £80 cashback for making the switch from disposable nappies to real nappies.

The 100 babies now signed up to the scheme will have saved an astonishing 450,000 disposables from landfill - enough to fill twenty-five of the Council's refuse trucks. Between them, they will also save their families around £50,000.

The 100th family to sign up was the Beatley family from Croxley Green, who will alone save around 4,500 disposables from going to landfill. Mum Sally says:

"I had my second child in December. With my first child I used disposable nappies as like any new mum I followed what everyone else did without researching into what else was available. My sister was the first person I knew who used washable nappies and at the time I thought she was making a lot of extra work for herself. She then explained the damage disposable nappies are having on our environment.

She added:

"When deciding to have children I would like to think I am doing the very best for them and their future environment. To me it's just another form of recycling and washing them is no hassle at all."

Councillor Phil Brading, Public Services & Health Portfolio Holder, says:

"This 100 landmark is great news and we would like to thank all the families who've signed up to the scheme and made such a big difference to the local environment. Using real nappies is just one of lots of really simple things you can do to reduce your impact on the local environment."
