Armed Forces Day: Council tribute
Date:
24 June 2009
Men and women who are serving in Afghanistan, as well as those who have served in Iraq and earlier conflicts, were honoured this week. A special flag was raised at Three Rivers House, Rickmansworth, on Monday ahead of National Armed Forces Day which takes place across the country on Saturday 27 June.
Speaking after the flag raising at the Council offices Vice Chairman, Ron Spellen, said:
"I'm proud to say my grandson has served in Iraq and Afghanistan in the Royal Marines. I would like to pay tribute to all the courageous men and women who currently serve in our armed forces - especially those who are still fighting in Afghanistan. We also remember with gratitude the veterans and their fallen comrades of Iraq, World War II and other conflicts.
"I would also like to give thanks to the tremendous social groups that veterans have formed and run, in particular the Royal British Legion which is very active in the district."
Council Leader Ann Shaw said:
"War causes great suffering. As well as honouring those who have served on the frontline, we should also remember the bravery and suffering of loved ones left behind. I am also delighted that the Government officially recognised last year the tremendous service of the Women's Land Army during the Second World War - this should have been done much, much, sooner."
The District Council pays tribute to local Women's Land Army volunteers in the current edition of Three Rivers Times.
