Watch this space: Don't lose your right to vote

Date:  09 August 2006

Three Rivers District Council is asking residents to look out for its annual electoral register forms that residents must complete to ensure they have the right to vote.

The forms will start being delivered from 11 August until the end of the month and residents are urged to make sure all their details are correct and send it back as soon as possible.

These annual canvass forms are important documents and it is a legal requirement that they must be filled in. Inclusion on the electoral register enables residents to vote in all elections including District Council, Parish Council, County Council and General Elections.

Chief Executive of Three Rivers District Council and Returning Officer, Dr. Steven Halls says:

"Voting is a democratic right and enables residents to choose how they want the district to be run. So it is vital that all residents fill in these forms and send them back as soon as possible. It will enable them to be included on the electoral register and help them avoid a knock on the door in October."

The electoral register is not only used for voting purposes. It is also used to check identity when applying for credit. Failure to be included on the register can affect residents' ability to obtain credit such as when applying for a mortgage.

The new electoral register will be published on 1 December 2006, and the local elections take place in May 2007.
