Understanding job adverts

Sometimes the language used in job advertisements can be very confusing. Here are some of the most common terms and abbreviations:

  • Pro Rata - This is usually written next to an annual salary where the job is part-time. It means 'proportionately' e.g. if the wage is £7,000 for full-time (say 40 hours per week) and you are working 20 hours, then you will earn £3,500 in a year.
  • CCDL - Means you need a clear current driving licence.
  • EXP - Experience: You need relevant work experience.
  • Quote Ref. - Quote the reference number when you ask for job details.
  • AGY - A job agency is advertising this job.
  • PA - Per annum - means for the whole year.
  • PW - Per week - means each week.
  • CV - Curriculum vitae. This is an information sheet about yourself, which should include your qualifications, experience and interests (See the information about writing your own CV).
  • Fixed term - This means the job is for a limited time e.g. 1 year fixed term contract.
  • Closing date - This is the date by which the employer must have received your application. It is important to follow the instructions on the job advertisement. Are they asking you to send in a CV or do you have to write or telephone for details and a job application form?
