New image for bowls
Older members of the Rickmansworth Cricket Club founded the Bowls Club in 1903 and the bowling green was in front of a pavilion that no longer exists. The first match was played with the Harrow Bowling Club on 11th July 1903.
After a new cricket pavilion was built in Scotsbridge Meadows, a bowling green was sited in front of this pavilion in 1924 but, in 1936, the Rickmansworth Council constructed the Basing Gardens Bowling Green and bowls have been played here since then.
Until 1938, only men played bowls for the Club but that year a Ladies' Club came into being. This continued until 1997 when an amalgamation of the Rickmansworth Men, Rickmansworth Ladies and the Foresters Bowling Club formed the present organisation.
The bowling facilities are shared with another club, the Royal Brisith Legion, and a rink is always available for public use.
"Roll-ups", inter-club competitions, matches at
Watford and District Bowling Association and at County levels are played in the outdoor season. Some club members have played in National Finals.
Playing standards are from absolute beginners to the aforesaid levels and coaching can be offered to new players, if required. Members enjoy social activities and have the opportunity to take part in a 'Bowls Break' holiday in the closed season, usually in April.
Bowls is a game for young and old alike. The youngest players are teenagers; the oldest is in the 90+ age group and playing well!
