Sunshine brings voters out
Date:
09 May 2006
With a little help from the sunshine, Three Rivers residents came out to vote in high numbers for last Thursday's local elections.
Sixteen of the 48 District Councillors were up for election and voter turnout in the district was 42% - higher than this year's national average of 37%.
In one ward, Chorleywood West, turnout was exceptionally high at 57%.
The District Council's Chief Executive, Steven Halls, said:
"It's very encouraging that so many people came out to vote on Thursday as it shows how much they care about the local services provided by Three Rivers District Council. Our services affect everybody's lives here and it's important that everyone has their say not only during elections, but also throughout the year by attending Local Area Forums, the Pensioners Forum and Youth Council.
"Ward Councillors are also happy to be contacted directly with any local questions or concerns."
The new composition of the Council is:-
- Liberal Democrat 30
- Conservative 11
- Labour 7
An updated version of the Council's Contact your Councillor booklet will be published shortly and will be available on the Council's website.
Local residents can have their say throughout the year at the regular Local Area Forums held across the district, which are attended by ward Councillors and local police. There is also a Pensioners Forum and Youth Council for older and younger residents. In addition, the majority of Council meetings are open to the public.
