Recycling goes on the road
Date:
29 August 2006
Three Rivers District Council is taking its recycling services out and about with two special 'roadshows' in September.
The roadshows will be rolling into Abbots Langley and South Oxhey for the day, giving local residents the chance to find out everything that they need to know about recycling in the district.
Recycling officers will be on hand with information on what can and cannot be recycled, why certain items can't be recycled, and the additional services available from the Council such as cashback for using reusable nappies.
Officers will also be able to answer any questions about the Fixed Penalty Notices that the Council has recently introduced under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005. Anyone who repeatedly 'contaminates' their recycling by placing the wrong items in their boxes or brown bin could be fined up to £100. Fines can also be issued for other offences including littering and flytipping.
Three Rivers is currently the top recycler in Hertfordshire, with residents recycling over 40% of their waste. However, several recycling loads have recently been rejected due to contamination. This cost the Council £2,000 each time, money that could be put to better use elsewhere.
Councillor Phil Brading, Public Services and Health Portfolio Holder, says:
"We are grateful to all residents for their fantastic recycling efforts so far, which have put us at the top in Hertfordshire. However, we still have work to do, especially with this increase in contamination recently. We provide all households with comprehensive information on their refuse and recycling collections to help them to get it right. These roadshows are another way for residents to find out everything they need to know, and we would encourage everyone to take a minute and drop in on the day."
The roadshows are taking place as follows:
Thursday 14 September - South Oxhey shopping precinct
Thursday 28 September - Abbots Langley High Street car park
The roadshows will run from 8.30am to 3.30pm.
