Nurse sentenced for Benefit fraud

Date:  19 October 2010

Miss Tanya Nasir appeared at Hemel Hempstead Magistrates Court on the 8 October 2010 where she was sentenced to a 12 month community order with a requirement to complete 120 hours unpaid work. The court heard that Miss Nasir had been claiming Benefits on the basis of living on a limited income as a single parent, and that she had failed to declare her employment as a bank nurse with the NHS.

In Watford Magistrates Court on Friday 17 September 2010 Miss Nasir pleaded guilty to four counts of Benefit fraud under Section 111A(1)(a) of the Social Security Administration Act 1992. During a counter-fraud investigation, evidence was obtained to show that Miss Nasir had been working as a bank nurse with the NHS while claiming benefits from Three Rivers District Council since October 2007. The case was considered so serious that it was adjourned until Friday 8 October 2010 in order for a probation report to be prepared.

The Council was awarded £500 towards prosecution costs.
