Glove love

Date:  01 December 2010

Got a glove that's lost its partner? Don't throw it away! Give it a new lease of life by bringing it to Three Rivers House and donating it to the Glove Love project.

Glove Love is a scheme to reduce waste run by Green Thing. Single gloves that have been separated from their original partners are collected from lost property boxes, washed, repaired, and repackaged with recycled nametags that explain the stories behind each glove. The uniquely paired Glove Love are then sold via Green Thing's website.

Councillor Phil Brading, Cabinet Member for Public Services & Health says "Three Rivers District Council is proud to support this initiative as part of our commitment to sustainability and reducing waste. Glove Love is a reminder that almost everything can be reused or recycled. By finding creative ways to reuse things that might otherwise be thrown away, we can all do our part to protect the environment."

Naresh Ramchandani, co-founder of Green Thing, said: "It's the age old scenario when you root through your wardrobe as winter closes in only to find you have one solitary glove. Glove Love is about finding a sustainable solution to this problem but at the same time making green living simple and fun. The donations of single gloves so far have been fantastic and we're still appealing for more."

To donate gloves, bring them to Three Rivers District Council offices in Rickmansworth between 8.30am - 5.30pm Monday to Thursday or 8.30am - 5pm on Fridays. A collection bin will be placed in reception from 1 December 2010 to 28 February 2011.

Green Thing is a not-for-profit organisation that continues to be reliant on the kind and generous donations and sponsorship of individuals, companies and trusts and foundations. Green Thing has reached people from 205 countries over 6 million times and has helped save over 1 million tonnes of CO2. Green Thing won the Best Green Digital award at the Green Awards 2008 and was described by judges as: "Fantastic, original and laughter inducing; a very strong concept and high quality material that's got legs!"

The Hertfordshire Waste Partnership (HWP) is a partnership between the county council and the ten district and borough councils. It was formed in 1992 to coordinate the waste management services provided by Hertfordshire's councils.

The Hertfordshire Waste Partnership is committed to increasing the amount we recycle in Hertfordshire to at least 50% by 2012, but recycling is only part of the solution. If we reduce the amount of waste we generate in the first place and reuse more household items, we will dramatically lower the amount of waste that needs to be recycled or disposed of.

The 'four Rs' - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover - are all critical in ensuring a sustainable, complete approach to waste management
