THREE RIVERS DISTRICT COUNCIL’S ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (EMS)

INFORMATION FOR STAFF

Introduction

Since January 2010 we have been developing an Environmental Management System (EMS).  This is a framework to manage, monitor and improve what we do that affects the environment through the council’s services and operations e.g. energy use, waste disposal and CO2 emissions from vehicles.  The framework includes policies, procedures and guidance to achieve this.

Why are we doing it?

We want to lead by example, reduce the environmental impact of our services and activities to the absolute minimum, so that we conserve our natural resources.  We also want to provide the best services we can to residents and community partners, and of course meet our legal responsibilities.  To demonstrate this we are working towards certification in a set of internationally recognised standards called ISO 14001, which we aim to achieve in the autumn of 2010.

Who is responsible for the EMS?

Everyone who works for or on behalf of the council has a responsibility to adhere to the principles, policies and procedures laid down in the EMS.  It forms part of the Strategic Plan which is led by the Chief Executive and Leader of the Council.  The system is managed by the Head of Sustainability, Nick Dimbleby, who works closely with an EMS Working Group, made up of specialist advisors from across the council’s services.

What’s in it for me?!

Procedures within the EMS help everyone to do their jobs effectively, and in a way that is reducing the impact of what we do to the environment.  By working to these you are contributing in a positive way to tackle some of the major threats to our environment, the biggest of which is climate change.  You also help the council to achieve its standards and what you learn through it you can use outside of work, for example to influence others to lead more sustainable lives.

Where can I get more information?

You can find more information about the EMS on the intranet, the main council website or on the sustainability website, ‘Our Climate Is Changing’.  You can also speak to someone directly by contacting the Sustainability Team.
