Don’t let thieves steal your Christmas

The festive season is a time of joy and happiness but for some their Christmas can be ruined by burglars and opportunists. This year don’t let thieves steal your Christmas. Protect yourself against theft with some helpful advice from the Three Rivers Community Safety Partnership.
Councillor Roger Seabourne, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Chair of the Community Safety Partnership, said:
“Most personal safety is about paying attention to your surroundings and the practical steps that you can take below can reduce you and your neighbours risk of crime even further. Three Rivers remains one of the safest places in England to live and crime levels continue to fall.”
Presents look nice under the Christmas tree but can also entice burglars so keep them out of view or don’t put them out till Christmas morning.
Remember to lock all windows and doors at night and when you leave home. Don’t forget with UPVC doors to lift the handle then turn the key to double lock the door.
Keep sheds and garages locked at all times and don’t store presents in these locations. You can register all your valuables for free on the police approved site www.immobilise.com.
If you are on holiday, use timer switches, cancel milk and papers and ask a neighbour to keep an eye out or if you are expecting a parcel make sure someone is there when it is delivered or arrange for a neighbour to take it.
“Not Sure Don’t Open the Door.” Don’t open your door to unexpected callers and never leave spare keys under a stone or flower pot. Report suspicious incidents to the police immediately.
Don’t leave cardboard boxes advertising you have expensive new gifts outside. Dispose of your present packaging carefully. Put boxes in the bottom of your brown bin or only put boxes out on collection day.
On a cold frosty morning don’t leave your car unattended whilst trying to thaw it out. It takes only a few seconds for it to be stolen and insurance companies may not pay out on your claim.
