Disabled Facilities Grant Housing
A disabled facilities grant is available for a range of works needed to help the disabled person live more independently in his/her home.
A mandatory grant is available for:
- Essential adaptations to give better freedom of movement into and around your home and to essential facilities within it.
- To make it easier to get in and out of the dwelling eg widening doors and installing ramps.
- Ensuring safety of the disabled person and other occupants eg providing a specially adapted room in which it would be safe to leave a disabled person unattended or improved lighting to ensure better visibility.
- To make access easier to a living room.
- To provide or improve access to the bedroom, kitchen, toilet, washbasin and bath or shower.
- To adapt heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use.
You can apply for a grant if you are:
- Either the owner of the dwelling or a tenant.
- A landlord applying on behalf of a disabled tenant.
Any grant will be dependent on a means test. Any amount of grant received will be the difference between the amount you are assessed as being able to afford and the total cost of the eligible works.
If you think you may be eligible for a grant you must first contact Adult Care Services at Hertfordshire County Council (01992 555555), who will visit you to assess your needs. They will then write us with their recommendations. Grants cannot be given for works that have already been carried out.
An application is not valid unless made on the appropriate form, completed in full and accompanied by any supporting material required. You can request an application form by e-mailing enquiries@threerivers.gov.uk or telephoning the Customer Services Centre on 01923 776611.
You should ensure that you separately secure any approval for building regulations or planning purposes that is required.
You will be asked to state in a certificate whether you intend to live in the property as an owner-occupier or tenant or to make it available for letting.
This is a grant condition, breach of which can trigger a demand for repayment of the grant. You may also be asked to show that you have lived in the property for three years prior to the application.
