Council tax crackdown

Date:  25 October 2005

A crackdown by Three Rivers District Council has led to successful proceedings against an Abbots Langley resident. The resident was ordered to pay over £16,000 in unpaid council tax, which had accrued since 1998, and costs to clear his account.

The tax dodger paid the debt and legal costs on Tuesday October 18 just three days before the District Council was due to repossess his home.

Councillor Richard Struck, Three Rivers District Council's portfolio for resources, said:

"This money was meant for spending on local services and we are delighted that this successful court case will make the cash available for local people. There is a tremendous commitment at Three Rivers District Council to providing excellent, value for money services to the community and there is a big difference between people in genuine difficulty and these unscrupulous tax dodgers."

"We will not be undermined by the odd tax dodger and are continuing to make every effort to bring these people to account, while supporting and advising those with difficulty in paying who contact us in good faith."

People in receipt of benefits or on low income are often entitled to council tax relief and the District Council is campaigning to ensure that local pensioners and people receiving benefits can claim their entitlements. Residents should contact the District Council as quickly as possible if they have difficulty in paying.
