Caddy liners now on sale

Date:  19 October 2011

You can now use corn starch bags to line your kitchen caddy, making the business of storing food waste and transferring it to the brown bin easier and cleaner.

New kitchen caddy liners

Council Phil Brading, Cabinet Member for Public Services, said: “Until now, the composting site has been reluctant to accept corn starch bags, but it has now been agreed that bags of a certain type, issued by the Council, can be used. So please only use these.”

“Of course you can still put your food waste directly into the brown bin, wrap it in newspaper or put it in an old cardboard carton if you prefer.”

Council supplied caddy bags can be purchased from various locations across the district at £2.50 for a roll of 52. Call our Customer Service Centre for more details.

If in doubt, leave it out

Remember to be careful not to contaminate your brown bins waste with plastics or other non-compostable items.

Council Phil Brading, Cabinet Member for Public Services, said: “There’s a problem at the moment with the amount of plastics cropping up in the organic waste."

"Please remember that the Council will not empty your brown bin if it is seen to contain contaminating items such as plastic bags or other non-compostable rubbish."

"If the waste is found to be contaminated when it is tipped at the composting site it is possible that the whole load will be rejected. It will then have to be sent to landfill, which is costly for the council taxpayer, and bad for the environment too.”

Council Brading continued: “Our residents have really taken to the new weekly organic waste collection, with the overall recycling rate peaking at 71% for a time during the summer. So it’s a great shame that a handful of people are contaminating their brown bins with the wrong sort of household waste, whether deliberately or otherwise.

When you put out your rubbish and recycling please take a moment to ensure the right things are going in the right bins and boxes, and if in doubt, leave it out!”
